                The Marine Department of Young Memorial received Coast Guard
                approvals this week for Tankerman and Able Seaman courses. The Tankerman approval is for
                Tank Barge DL, Tank Barge DL & LG, Tank Barge DL Refresher, Tank Barge LG Refresher,
                Basic Fire fighting. Courses will begin upon
                completion of a Fire Field and training by Instructor.  
                Also approved, a 46 hour Able Seaman course. Students can attend this course and take their test at LTC Young
                Memorial.

                LTC, Young Memorial hosted an In-Service as part of the Louisiana
                Community and Technical College MegaConference this week.  Participants from both LTC, Young Memorial and LTC, L.E. Fletcher Campus visited
                the U.S. Coast Guard facility in Morgan City where they were given an
                impressive tour of the Coast Guard and its services.

                    provided a tour of the technology which allows the US Coast Guard to monitor the waterways
                    surrounding Morgan City.

                Following the tour of the Coast Guard, SEACOR MARINE
                of Morgan City provided an on site vessel tour showcasing their Maritime Information
                Systems.  For years SEACOR has been utilizing GLOBE WIRELESS
                software which allows seagoing vessels worldwide to communicate with their offices in
                Louisiana.  The tour aboard the SEACOR POWER lead by Mr. Seth Martin
                showcased the abilities of GLOBE OFFSHORE which is used to record
                and transmit the whereabouts, inventory, crewmembers and engine
                activities on over 200-plus ships worldwide. 
                The participants even sent an electronic mail from aboard the SEACOR POWER
                to the campus at Young Memorial sans telephone or cable lines.

                The day concluded with a visit from Mr. Dan Hall of the U.S.
                Coast Guard's Regional Exam Center in New Orleans.  Mr. Hall discussed new
                developments regarding STCW Basic Safety Training, GMDSS, and ARPA in relation to
                Standards Training Certifications and Watchkeeping 95.  Mr. Hall also answered
                questions regarding specialized topics including licensing, CFRs, and the future of
                Maritime Training. 
                
                This two-day InService, focussing on technology and uses for technology in the Maritime
                Industry,  part is part of the State's ongoing commitment to continuing education for
                its instructors while maintaining best practices with Industry and various governing
                bodies. 
                Thursday's session continued the theme of Technology in Maritime
                Training as Mr. Craig Lehman of Teaching
                Technologies (Fresno, California) informed the members of new developments in PC

                over fifty students via the Internet.  Mr. Lehman fielded questions regarding drill
                and practice, streaming audio & video, as well as current and future trends in

                Department of Labor, & Faculty Meet for STCW 
                Morgan City, Louisiana, October 29, 1999 
                Gregory L. Garrett announced today that the Young Memorial Marine Operations Department
                met here at the Morgan City Campus for a 
                 meeting regarding STCW Basic Safety Training.  To date local industry
                seeking STCW Training, have donated over $65,000 towards the construction
                of a Training Pool and Fire Training Field.   Ms. Lori Brannon, representing the
                Louisiana Community and Technical
                College System, representatives from the Department of Labor and local Marine Industry met in effort to garner
                resources to conduct STCW Training at Young Memorial Campus.  LTC, Young Memorial and various
                state agencies are offering extensive incentives for STCW, Tankerman and other US Coast
                Guard approved courses. |

            Baton Rouge, Louisiana, September 24, 1999 
            Gregory L. Garrett announced today that the Young Memorial Marine Operations Department
            met in Baton Rouge for a meeting regarding STCW Basic Safety Training (Standards,
            Training, Certification and Watchkeeping.) Representatives from the Louisiana Community and Technical College System,
            local Marine Industry and Young Memorial met today in effort to garner resources to
            conduct STCW Training at Young Memorial Campus.

            Rules of the Road course Approved! 
            September 17, 1999: Young Memorial's 18-hour Rules
            of the Road course has been approved by the U.S.C.G.  
            This Is an approved course for students studying for 100/200 ton, OUTV and Unexpected
            Fishing Industry Vessels. These students can take their Rules test in the classroom and
            not at the R.E.C. |
