A ribbon cutting ceremony for the Hugh and Byrnes Young Marine and Petroleum
Safety Training Center in Morgan City was held by our Officials Friday,
March 31, 2017.

is happy to announce that we are now offering classes at the Marine &
Petroleum Safety Training Center located at 331 Dickson Road; Houma, LA.
Associate Degree for Mariners
April 3, 2012 Morgan City, Louisiana) For
centuries seafarers have put to sea for many reasons: for a better life,
for adventure, and even for the defense of their country. The offshore
environment is little known to today’s lay person, but the hard work,
dangers, and family separations are instilled in the minds of the sailors
who venture to work offshore everyday. Work schedules that have a mariner
offshore away from home 6 to 7 months out of a year deprive today’s offshore
worker from many rewards, and goals a person working on land is able to
obtain without much difficulty. One of those rewards, almost unobtainable,
is a college degree—until now.
S.C.L.T.C. Young Memorial has developed an Associate Degree in Marine
Transportation that was recently approved by the Louisiana Board of Regents.
This unique degree contains courses needed for a mariner to move along their
career path from Able Seaman to Master. The Marine Transportation Degree is
the first degree that will also give working mariners credit for their time
at sea.
S.C.L.T.C. Young Memorial recognized and created this degree so that
mariners working on their Merchant Seaman credentials could also be working
on a college degree. The Marine Transportation Degree allows a mariner to
exit with a Certificate of Technical Studies, a Technical Diploma, or an
Associate of Applied Science in Marine Transportation. These credentials
will allow the mariner a chance to obtain the rewards not usually offered to
an offshore worker. |

Credentials for the Mariner
Two
certificates and a diploma will be issued to students.
Those certifications are AB & Bosun and they will
also receive a Technical Diploma for Master.
SCLTC-Young Memorial will start offering these
courses on January 2, 2013.
This is the
first time in 40 years that a maritime student will be awarded with such
recognition.
