GMDSS   

Every person in charge of or performing radio duties on a ship that is required to participate in the GMDSS is required to complete the U.S.C.G. approved 70 hour course.

 
A trainee successfully completing this course and passing the prescribed examinations will be enable to efficiently operate the GMDSS equipment, and to have primary responsibility for radio communications during distress, urgency and safety priority incidents as well as perform routine communications with the equipment.
 
 
Prerequisites: Obtaining a GMDSS STCW95 endorsement also requires an FCC GMDSS Operator License. Attaining that license requires the student to pass FCC element 1 and element 7. No time will be devoted to matters related to the FCC exam materials or training. Information on these exams can be obtained from the Marine Department and from the FCC web site, www.wireless.fcc.gov.
